Ever since completing my book, Read, Create & Share: A Year of Growing with Young Children, I have been inspired to continue our acts of kindness each month.  Give a Book and Treat Kindness Challenge is our newest way to spread kindness in our community.

Have you seen a Little Free Library near you?  They are popping up all over in people’s front yards, next to playgrounds and even in banks.  The idea is very simple.  Take a book and return a book.  See a Little Free Library, stop and borrow a book. When you are done, return it or another book for others to read.  People all across the world are spreading a love of reading by building these libraries for others to enjoy. As of January 2016, there were over 36,000 Little Free Libraries.

Give a book and treat kindness challenge is a great random act of kindness that kids can perform. Plus, it spreads a love of reading. There is even a free printable hot chocolate note to include.

We decided to drop off some children’s books to a Little Free Library in our area.  My kids picked out a handful of books that were in good shape that they had either outgrown or really wanted to share with others.

Then, we decided we wanted to add a little special bonus treat.  We bought a few gift cards from a local restaurant that sells hot chocolate.  We attached them to a little message sheet (download the FREE printable below).

Then we used a binder clip to secure the gift card and note to the inside of a few of the books.  We made a note for you to include too.

Time to make the deliveries to the Little Free Library.  We picked a perfect location because this library was in need of some children’s books.

100 acts of kindness

My blogging buddies at Coffee Cups and Crayons and Toddler Approved do a yearly 100 Acts of Kindness Challenge every January.  Visit their sites to see more awesome kindness challenges to do with your kids.

And, for more kindness books check out our KINDNESS BOOKLIST.

P.S. For 12 more kindness activities each paired with a children’s story, get my new E-book!

Read, Create & Share is an e-book resource for families who want to build meaningful service learning experiences with their children. Books for kids, creative hands-on projects and service learning ideas are included.

What a great idea! I have not seen ANY of those little free libraries but we’ll be keeping an eye out for them.

Love this idea! Those little libraries are a gift themselves – free books! – but to find something extra will definitely bring a smile to someone!

What a sweet idea! We take a lot of books to our Little Free Library at a local playground, and I love the idea of adding in an extra gift.

I love when we find a Little Free Library at a playground. I think that is such a smart spot to put them.
