An ABC dig activity to do with preschoolers after reading Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site.

Do you have a little one who can tell the difference between a bulldozer, a digger, and an excavator? My boys are still mesmerized by construction vehicles.  I think we’ve read just about every construction vehicle book on the market.  One of our all-time favorites was Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site which is a Virtual Book Club for Kids selection.  We are sharing an ABC Dig and Construct alphabet activity that is a perfect compliment to the book.

The Book: Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site

Goodnight, Goodnight Construction Site by Sherri Duskey Rinker follows different construction vehicles around the construction site as they shut down for the night.  It’s a perfect bedtime book for any vehicle lover.

The ABC Activity

Materials Needed: large beans or large pasta pieces, permanent marker, small container, free printable sorting sheet (see below), digger or loading truck

Preparing the Alphabet Activity

  1. You will need to write the letters of the alphabet on white beans or pasta pieces.  You want to have multiple sets of the alphabet beans for the activity.
  2. Place the beans/pasta in a shallow container.
  3. Assemble the toy digging vehicles next to the “dig site.”
  4. Download and print the construction sorting sheet.

Playing the ABC Activity

Have the child dig/scoop out a load of ABC beans or pasta.

Empty the beans or pasta into the construction site.

The child then builds by sorting the beans or pasta into the correctly labeled structures. Encourage your child to name the letters as they are placed in the correct spaces.  You can also say the sound the letter makes during play.

Either get a new scoop of beans and repeat or clear the board and repeat.

I’m confused. How are they sorting the letters? As in, what do the boxes day? Curved? Straight?

They are sorting by visual characteristics- those that are round, straight, or both.
