Can you recall a book that your child had you read over and over again? For me, it was Little Blue Truck. I’ve read it so much that I can now read it with my eyes shut. It’s one of those books that I didn’t mind repeated readings of because it’s such a delightful one to share with kids. Today, we are using this Virtual Book Club selection to inspire a little alphabet learning.
A new season of Virtual Book Club for kids has begun. You can follow along with weekly themes, books, and learning ideas in the private Facebook group. Become a part of the Virtual Book Club group. I’ll be sharing an activity at least once a month for the group too.

The Book: Little Blue Truck
Little Blue Truck by Alice Schertle is the story of kind and helpful blue truck who with the help of the farm animals pushes a grumpy dump truck out of the mud.
If you enjoy Little Blue Truck as much as we did, you’ll also want to check out Little Blue Truck Leads the Way and the new Little Blue Truck’s Halloween.
The Alphabet Activity
It’s time for a little truck alphabet learning. The purpose of this activity is to help kids practice letter identification.
Materials Needed
ABC animals (see below), scissors, glue stick, blue and black construction paper, and a tissue box.
Make the Truck
With the blue construction paper, cut two rectangles to form the side of a truck. Glue the blue paper to the side of a tissue box. Then, cut two black circles for wheels and attach those to the truck.
Prepare the Farm Animals
Download and print the ABC farm animals. Cut out each animal spread them around the room.

Time to Play
The child “drives” the truck around the room looking for ABC animals to pick up. As each animal is found, the child should name the letter on the animal and then place it in his truck.
Play continues until all the animals have bee loaded in the truck.
Variations
-Have your child name an object that begins with each letter as they are collected.
-Try calling out a sound and having the child find the letter animal that represents that sound.
Enjoy reading Little Blue Truck and playing this alphabet activity with your kids. It may soon be one of your child’s favorites that he asks for over and over again.
