Vocabulary Building and Discussion Questions for Jabari Jumps
Vocabulary: scary, rough, double, surprise
Discussion Questions:
-What is something you tried recently for the first time? Look at the cover of the book. This boy’s name is Jabari. What do you think he is thinking about doing for the first time? (before reading)
-How do you think Jabari is feeling at the beginning of the story? What about in the middle? How about now that we are almost to the end? Have his feelings changed? (during reading)
-How did Jabari’s family support him during the story? How can we help someone take chances and try new things? (after reading)
Ready to Make a Splash- Beginning Sounds Activity
Skill: beginning sounds
Materials: printable (included-see below)
Preparation: Print the pool and cut the cards included. Laminate for durability if desired.
Playing: Select a card and name the picture. Identify the beginning sound. If the sound begins with /j/ then the card gets to jump up and down on the diving board and into the pool. If not, it sits outside the pool. Continue until all cards have been used.

Use the card template (included-see below) to create a card of encouragement for someone. Mail or deliver your card in person.
