pete the cat and the perfect pizza

In Pete the Cat and the Perfect Pizza Party by Kimberly & James Dean, Pete  is having a pizza party and wants the guests to have a perfect pizza. What ingredients would make the perfect pizza? Perhaps ingredients that start with the letter p.

Pete the Cat and the Perfect Pizza Party Activities

Vocabulary:

perfect, puzzled, groovy

Discussion Questions:

-What is your favorite pizza topping? (before reading)
-How many ingredients are on the pizza? Periodically stop and count the ingredients throughout the story. (during reading)
-Do you think that Pete’s pizza is perfect? What would you change? (after reading)

Literacy Activity: Build the Perfect /P/ Pizza

Skill: Beginning letter sounds
Materials: printable (included), cardstock or paper, scissors, and laminator (optional)

Preparation: Print and cut out the printable pieces on cardstock or paper. Laminate for durability if you desire.

Playing: Place the pizza and refrigerator in the middle of the students or hang on a board for all to see. Pass out an ingredient to each child. Students will take turns naming their ingredients and identifying the beginning sound. If the ingredient starts with /p/ they get to add it to the pizza. If it doesn’t, then they place ”back” in the refrigerator.

Here are some other ideas to try too.

  • Let students draw their ideal pizza.
  • Make and/or eat pizza.
  • Set up a pizza shop in the dramatic play area.
  • Read more Pete the Cat books and compare them to see which characters overlap.

I Am a huge fan of Pete the Cat. I love the idea of pizza for children to learn the beginning sound of the letter “p”. The many ways of adding another activity to the lesson.
