Vocabulary:
perfect, puzzled, groovy
Discussion Questions:
-What is your favorite pizza topping? (before reading)
-How many ingredients are on the pizza? Periodically stop and count the ingredients throughout the story. (during reading)
-Do you think that Pete’s pizza is perfect? What would you change? (after reading)
Literacy Activity: Build the Perfect /P/ Pizza
Skill: Beginning letter sounds
Materials: printable (included), cardstock or paper, scissors, and laminator (optional)
Preparation: Print and cut out the printable pieces on cardstock or paper. Laminate for durability if you desire.
Playing: Place the pizza and refrigerator in the middle of the students or hang on a board for all to see. Pass out an ingredient to each child. Students will take turns naming their ingredients and identifying the beginning sound. If the ingredient starts with /p/ they get to add it to the pizza. If it doesn’t, then they place ”back” in the refrigerator.
Here are some other ideas to try too.
- Let students draw their ideal pizza.
- Make and/or eat pizza.
- Set up a pizza shop in the dramatic play area.
- Read more Pete the Cat books and compare them to see which characters overlap.
